I LOVE Francine Jay. Her book "The Joy of Less" has always been my favorite book on minimalism. This book is like the next step after you've been decluttering for awhile. I've been an active declutter-er for almost 2 years now, but I needed a push to pursue my efforts further. By taking a look at essentials from the ground up, instead of looking at pairing down, I got a completely new perspective.
After reading about Ms. Jay's 100 essentials and some "extras" from there, I made my own list of 100 ish things, and my extras that were the most important to me. From there it was very opening just how much other stuff I still had, even after the carloads upon carloads of donations over the year. This new point of view really helped me to let go of a LOT more stuff I wasn't ready to part with in the initial mindset.
I want to say that I was definitely not ready for this type of approach before I began minimizing my life. If you are fairly new to minimalism, this is not the place to start. Try her other book, "The Joy of Less". But, if you've been minimizing awhile now and are looking for more, this is a great tool for doing just that.

Read this in two hours.
Great ideas and thought provoking
If it weren’t bedtime and if I didn’t have mommy responsibilities in the morning, I’d have an all-night decluttering session.
I liked the whole thing the descriptions and reasons, the pictures, and the list at the end. I am one who does best with visual examples. I think this is so helpful to pack a bag for travel, and eventually maybe I can pare down the rest of my things...
Moving abroad. This book is helping to streamline my process. Love everything that Francine writes!
I thought a long time before buying this book. I had read the Joy of Less first and loved it. This is a very thoughtful and personal book about carefully choosing your possessions and getting the ones that are really useful and that you like enough to take good care of. I have referenced this book many times for inspiration.
I love Francine Jay and follow her blog. I've read all of her minimalist books and this was just as good as her others. One thing I especially liked is that she addressed the fact that her items were not a "mandatory" list for minimalists but simply what she owns and WHY she owns it. I did take her recommendation on a pour over coffee maker and I love it. She is an inspiration to want-to-be minimalists everywhere.
Lays a good framework for minimalism. But, as it's just a novel-length list, and the actual information could be made into a pamphlet, it's not worth $8.99.
It's not necessarily a good or bad book, I just feel that for what it ended up being, it cost too much. I think it deserved 2.99 instead of the 8.99 I paid. I thought this might be a more generalized "100 essentials," but it's actually a specific list for the author.
